The
Macquarie Marshes Discovery
Weekend is an annual event where visitors are guided around
the Nature Reserve by National Parks and Wildlife Service
staff.
Activities
During
the weekend a range of activities will be available. These have been designed to meet the needs and abilities of
all ages.
Activities
will include guided marsh walks eg river red gum woodland and
lagoon walks and opportunities to observe birds in their natural
environment. Also available may be local optional
activities eg woolshed tour, evening entertainment etc.
Activities change from year to year depending on
conditions and access to different areas within the Marshes and
the theme of the weekend.
Information
on walks, optional activities, entertainment etc is detailed on
a notice board at the camping ground.
This will also include prices, equipment needs, if any
and duration times.
More
detailed information on activities can be obtained by contacting
the people below closer to the date.
Accommodation
Camping
facilities and amenities (showers and toilets) will be provided
at Quambone racecourse, 1km south of Quambone on the Warren Rd
from Friday night to Monday. Caravans are welcome.
There are also a few Farmstay options.
These vary in price and available facilities.
Meals
On
the Saturday and Sunday nights the Quambone Resources Committee
will cater a BBQ dinner at the Quambone Hall.
Price will be kept to a minimum.
At other times over the weekend food and meals will be
available at either the Quambone Store or Sundowner Hotel.
General
There
is a hotel in Quambone for all your refreshment needs, as well
as a general store which sells fuel, groceries, take away food
etc.
As
numbers for the weekend are limited, bookings and pre-payment
are essential. Please
fill in the enclosed booking sheet and send it back by the
Monday prior to the Long Weekend.
In
the event of wet weather access roads to the marshes can become
impassable and so activities may have to be restricted or called
off. If this occurs pre-payments
will be partly or fully refunded depending on the disruption to
activities.
Things
you can bring: portable stove,
tent, old sand shoes for walking in water (gumboots fill with
water and become cumbersome), shorts, long sleeve shirts, hat,
chair, sunglasses, sunscreen, insect repellent, water bottle,
personal first aid kit and back pack. You may also wish to bring
binoculars, camera, field guide to birds, plants etc (A
waterproof bag is recommended for carrying valuables such as
cameras).
Snakes,
mosquitoes and other insects are common in the Marsh so you
should bring an insect proof tent or mosquito net, insect
repellent and gaiters for leg protection if you have them.
