Coonamble Streets Ahead Committee was formed in 1994 to
“Revitalise Coonamble in a social and economic sense through
town beautification, business & tourism development, youth &
employment programs, events & marketing.”
Streets Ahead is a sub-committee of Coonamble Shire Council. The
organisation is fully volunteer-based with no paid staff.
Membership is open to all local residents and is free. An
executive committee of 8 people, elected each year at the AGM,
oversees the general operations of the group and manage funds on
behalf of the sub-groups. Sub-groups who meet separately
include: the Business Action Group & the Events and marketing
group.
Since its inception Coonamble Streets Ahead has been
instrumental in the following major projects:
·Establishment
of Coonamble Community Radio (now an independent incorporated
group holding a permanent broadcasting licence) and Driving
development of the Nickname Hall of Fame and Coonamble Riverwalk
·Quarterly
community market days (still operated by Streets Ahead)
·Formation
of Coonamble Garden Club (now an independent group with a
membership of around 100)
·Planting
and maintenance of garden beds in Coonamble’s main street
·Formation
of a ‘Friends of the Flicks’ in the previously closed Plaza
Theatre to fundraise for the Theatre’s restoration.
·Staging
of annual events including a Bush Poets’ Breakfast to coincide
with the town’s annual Rodeo & Campdraft; Christmas Carnivale in
the main shopping district; Shop Locally Campaigns; hosting of
touring performances such as Co-opera brought by Regional Arts
NSW and ZEAL Theatre tour of the Forwards in 2006. Applying and
receiving funding for a Rural Transaction Centre (now an
independent incorporated body).
·Staging
of the Sing Sesqui (150th) Anniversary Concert and Dinner for
Coonamble & production of a CD.
