Material Girls

Dusty –   or muddy! -  cowboys and cowgirls not quite your scene?

Or perhaps all the rodeo action is just too full on and you’re looking for a break?

The “Material Girls” invite you to visit the Coonamble Shire library to view our fifth annual Patchwork and Quilting exhibition, open
only on Saturday 6th and Sunday June 7th from 9am to 4pm.

There will be many locally made, never-before exhibited quilts, cushions, bags and articles to see in the air-conditioned venue, along with raffle and lucky door prizes for you to win, and the opportunity to vote for your favourite quilt, all for only $3 entry. Wendy Knight, from “The Patchwork Shed” in Narrabri will have a selection of goodies from her shop for sale too, just in case inspiration to create strikes you!

Proceeds from the exhibition go to local charities and organisations, or to those who help people from our area, and we will also be supporting “Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea” in support of the Cancer Council.

A little about the Material Girls….

In 1998 a group of women from the Coonamble/Quambone/Gulargambone area started a patchwork group, where we would work on quilts for one another over the course of the year, learning new techniques as well as sharing inspiration, ideas and friendship along the way. We would meet in one another’s homes, weather and family commitments permitting. Countless dozens of  cups of tea and many hundreds of kilometres have been travelled between homes in the district to produce an array of unique quilts, stitcheries and patchwork items. Over the years, either as individuals or as a group, we have made and donated quilts to many community groups and charities to raffle or auction to help raise money – now more than $10,000 in total. 2009 will be our fifth show, coinciding with the Coonamble Rodeo, which has been  running for over 54 years now. The Coonamble Rodeo & Campdraft is the largest event held each year in the town and is the largest combined Rodeo/Campdraft in the Southern Hemisphere. Around 1000 cowboys and cowgirls, along with approximately 4000 spectators, head across the central western plains of NSW to the edge of the Outback, transforming the Coonamble Showground into a full-on explosion of wild riding action.
